Gudy van Poppel is a fulltime Dutch Bladesmith well known for his work in both Europe and the United States. He started as a genuine Blacksmith and has been making blades for several decades. His Gitano design for Lion Steel he describes thus, "My idea behind the Gitano was to make a folding knife that is based on old south European folding knives in a new style. What I like about these knives is its elegant lines and often large blades in relation to the handles"

LionSteel loved Gudy’s idea and decided to start this new collaboration with him and Tools For Gents that helped us to develop the final versions. The Lion Steel Gitano Green Canvas Micarta is an extremely practical folding knife that joins the “Tradition by LionSteel” collection.

It has a Niolox stainless steel satin blade and, in this version, 6AI4V titanium bolsters and liners with tough green canvas micarta handle scales. For its light weight and average dimensions, Gitano is the new elegant slipjoint knife to keep with you in your everyday working life.

    Lionsteel Gitano,

Posted by John from Eldwick on 31st Jul 2023

Just a quick ps, to my review, Gudy van Poppel, is pronounced Hooodie,, and Gitano is pronounced Hitano,, (as in Roma Gypsies,,). The Gypsy connection, is because this knife is styled after the Navaja knives, favoured by the Spanish Gypsies.. Yes,, I've nothing better to do, than look up such things,,, lol...

    Micarta Gitano

Posted by John from Eldwick on 29th Jul 2023

I've just got this one, it has a VERY, heavy duty slipjoint mechanism, and is not like any other non locking folder I've ever experienced, it is literally "hard to close"... (I'll have to be very careful, till I get the hang of this one,).. All the above is a complete "positive" don't misunderstand me... This knife is just about perfect, , and I highly recommend it,, so long as you have a "strong grip"... Not a knife for the faint hearted, but I for one, think it is absolutely superb,, should be able to give it seven stars,,!!!!..

    Quality folder.

Really pleased with this one, superb build quality, solid as a rock. Strong backspring means opening and closing is very positive, quirky shape but I like it, full marks to Lion Steel for bringing it out at this price range, I wouldn't have been surprised to see it priced £40 dearer.
