Excellent design
I was very impressed with the quality of the Glock Feldmesser 81 survival knife, and the supplied sheath. Made in Austria, the knife is versatile and well-balanced. Its centre of gravity is almost exactly in the centre of the knife, making it an ideal and popular choice as a throwing knife, and the butt of the handle features a removable plug intended to allow the knife to be used as a bayonet via attachment to the Steyr Aug rifle. With a basic locking clip to prevent the knife from being drawn accidentally, as well as a rope loop and a belt clip with basic locking mechanism, the knife can be carried safely but still drawn with relative speed and ease. The black coating helps to protect the main part of the blade from exposure to the elements, and the cutting edge of the main blade is sharpened and ready for use. The only issues I have is with the black coating, which covers both the saw blades and the swedge, or false edge, reducing the cutting ability of these parts of the knife. I chose the FM81 over the FM78 specifically because of the saw-blade edge, but was disappointed by how the black coating reduced the functionality of this feature, and would have preferred for all cutting edges on the knife to be sharpened, bare-metal edges, and for the knife to have a thinner black coating, possibly applied using a different method to the one chosen. I would have only awarded the knife 4 stars for these reason had I not been so impressed with the tool overall
