This is a simple version of a simple Japanese design, a no nonsense folder with a folded metal handle, non-locking blade and a simple extended tang to open it. The Higonokami style is a friction folder, with no lock, held open by the user’s hand acting on the tang.

You'll appreciate the simplicity of the sparse, Nagao design – there’s nothing on this knife that’s surplus to requirements. The handle is of distressed, folded stainless steel, with a scallop to accommodate the fingers when the blade is open. The blade pivots around a rivet, spaced with a pair of plain brass washers.

Manufactured by Hitachi, Blue Paper Steel was named after the blue paper they packaged the steel in. It is a pure carbon steel with the addition of chrome and wolfran to help resist corrosion and keep the edge for longer.

    Lovely little knife

Posted by Karl on 22nd Apr 2021

Lovely little knife, and one with a rich heritage. The folded metal on the case makes it a real beauty. UK street legal too. The only reason for this not being given 5 stars is that it arrived very blunt indeed and took a bit of work to get it to a useful sharpness.

    Charming.

Honestly I only really bought one of these because of the history, they look a little rough but not in a way that isn't charming, the handle at least is very pretty. Nagao Higonokami's are made by a 4th generation knife maker whose family and company has been making these since 1866, he's the only maker left officially allowed to use the higonokami name. The knife itself has great edge retention, I've been using it to carve up wood and haven't had to sharpen it or strop it once yet and surprisingly it carves wood better than a Flexcut whittle in my opinion. They are a little smaller than they look in the pictures but this is a plus in my opinion as they don't look very threatening at all so they are perfect for EDC also if you are inclined that way.
