Description

For over 125 years, the Feuerhand Baby Special 276 has been a trusted source of light This classic hurricane lantern operates without electricity, making it a sustainable and reliable choice that uses fuel sparingly and efficiently.

Hurricane lanterns are so-called “primary light sources” that run on kerosene or lamp oil, made possible by a special cold-air system.

The name reflects its weather resistance: the shatterproof and heat resistant glass cylinder shields the flame, protecting it from wind and rain while keeping its calm and even burn pattern safe.

Crafted from galvanized sheet steel, the Baby Special 276 frame is exceptionally durable and corrosion-resistant. Coloured models feature an additional powder coating.

    Leaks !!!

Posted by Tony from Dorset on 3rd Nov 2025

Really disappointed with this. Looks great out the box. Unfortunately due to overspray the burner unit and the globe lifter leaver were so stuck in place they wouldn’t move initially. After a lot of very gentle manipulation they freed off leaving a small amount of missing paint. The biggest concern however is the leaking of fuel. I filled it up as per the instructions let the wick soak etc. Wiped it down and placed it on a paper towel to check for leaks. Lit the wick and all great. Works really well but cannot be moved in anyway shape or form as it absolutely gushes fuel from the filler cap, burner assembly and the shoulders of the uprights. I emptied the fuel to half way but still the same if moved. After doing a lot of digging on the web it seems to be the norm. Even the Feuerhand instructions state it will leak if moved and needs to be placed on a flat surface and left. Very disappointed with the product. I thought you were supposed to be able to use a lantern to light your way not just as a table decoration.!!!

    Lantern

It's better to have 1 or more of these lanterns for when the lights go out. Simple to fuel and use , give off a decent light , and they give off a nice heat for cold hands if needed. Well made and packaged. Better to have and not need than need and not have. A must have.

It's a great well made lantern. Very compact and light. It'll last me a lifetime.

    excellent product

These are well made, useful and frankly, a pleasure to own. Nice for late evenings in the garden and a good back up for preppers. They even look pretty good as an ornament by a fireplace or window. In years past I have tried cheap copies, all failed quickly and were a waste of money. These seem to be among the best avalable today.

    Classic

What a lovely bit of kit, not the biggest light thrower compared to modern leds but has a beautiful natural old skool feel, just such a lovely thing to be around. I’ve filled mine with lamp oil fuel with citronella so helps to keep the bugs away, perfect on a garden table or outside when camping etc

    poor quality assurance

Posted by Gavin Cutler on 23rd Nov 2021

I am not as satisfied as the other reviewers. The example i received had a badly buckled baseplate under the glass globe from which the wire globe guards sprung out. this required remedial work with pliers and punches to straighten out, or face the hassle of returning the defective item. As a mechanical engineer i am certainly not impressed. the globe-raising lever also does not lock. For a product which has been around 90 years or so, "could do (a lot) better.

    Feurhand lantern

Posted by Daniel in York on 24th Aug 2021

Having been waiting on father to refurbish my vintage Tilley lamp since before lock-down I decided to give the baby special a try, forgoing the complications of vapourised mantles for a simple cotton wick soaked with paraffin. The result is fantastic - simple operation, charming ambience and a perfectly reliable little lamp for many camping trips to come! It now has a spot beside the back-door for evenings out in the garden, and to be honest if I have to wait another three years for the Tilley it'll not bother me one bit! Buy your paraffin in 5ltr kegs and transfer to a small plastic jug with spout to avoid spillage.....a full tank of 300ml should last around 20hrs assuming a modest wick. Be sure to keep it upright in transit to avoid leaks and damage to adjacent fabrics. Enjoy!!

    First one

Posted by Bushcraft Novice on 22nd Jan 2016

Never owned one before and after loads and loads research (googling) I kept coming across the Feuerhand and the Petromax and it could only be the Feuerhand for me seeing it was the first of it type with Petromax coming after, I was a little bit worried after reading many reviews that mention that they leak well mine doesn't
