The Opinel knife was invented by Joseph Opinel in 1890 in Savoie as a simple working man's or peasant's knife. It proved popular with the local farmers, herdsmen, and paysans-vignerons (peasant winemakers) of the area. In 1897, a series of twelve sizes, numbered 1 to 12, was developed. From 1901-1903, Joseph Opinel built his first factory in Pont de Gévoudaz and produced a machine for mass production of the knife's wooden handles. A few years later Opinel annual sales were in the hundreds of thousands, and by the start of World War II as many as 20 million knives had been sold.

Ideal for sporting activities such as mountaineering, paragliding, trekking, canyoning, pot holing, sailing and other nautical activities the Opinel No.8 Outdoor Knife is an excellent tool for the outdoor enthusiast or survivalist.

    A future classic

Posted by Rick on 3rd Dec 2014

The original Opinel character is undiminished even though it's a completely different knife apart from the locking mechanism. The plastic handle won't ever stick the blade closed, unlike the old wooden handles which would swell if damp. The blade is Sandvik steel with useful serrations as previously mentioned. It doesn't feel different to the original in the hand or in character but it is undeniably better. I would be happy to rely on this knife in any outdoor or survival situation. Very sharp, easily found if dropped, and has a whistle.

    Interesting

Nice looking knife. Fiddly but solid locking mechanism that's usually bunged up with pocket fluff, but it's tactile and mechanical which make it a pleasure to own, use and look at due in part to it's quality, stamped logos and clever whistle which sometimes I pretend is a magic flute and pipe the dogs down the stairs with.

    Great Knife

Posted by Steven on 29th Aug 2012

This is really an updated version of the classic Opinel. It feels much the same in the hand with the familiar sweeping handle and Virobloc lock, but with some noticeable upgrades. The blade is thicker and made from decent stainless steel and is also part serrated which is very useful. The handle is made from a nice plastic with a good finish. It's comfortable to hold and feels quite grippy for an Opinel, especially compared to the usual wood. A 110 decibel whistle and lanyard hole is built into the handle. Overall it's a really nice knife. Anyone that likes Opinels will love this. I've now ordered a second. I think I've finally found a knife that will replace my No. 7 carbon Opinel.
