Bill Moran is recognized as the grandfather of American custom knifemaking and the founding father of the American Bladesmith Society. He started pounding steel, making knives more than fifty years ago. If you're lucky enough to find a custom-made Moran to buy, expect to shell out five-figures, minimum. His work and designs are that revered.

Spyderco is privileged to offer a production fixed-blade collaboration patterned in Bill Moran's ageless tradition. Available in two distinct blade shapes. The Spyderco Bill Moran FB02 has a drop-point shape while the Spyderco Bill Moran FB01 has an upswept Bowie-style blade.

Both blades are flat-ground VG-10 and carry Bill's signature. They are tapered, starting thick where the blade joins the handle, thinning down the spine to a fine, uniformly ground tip. In the hand the knife conveys a unique feeling of balance, called by some a sweet spot.

The sweet spot is due to the blade and handle being comparable in weight. This balance transfers into a feeling of steady control over the cutting edge. The FRN handle three-dimensionally fills out the palm and is inlayed with a panel of non-sliding Kraton. Highly recommended for hunting and camping both models come in a molded Boltaron sheath with multi-position G-Clip fastening system.

    Excellent little hunting knife

Posted by BC on 28th Sep 2015

I have owned one of these for a very long time now - not sure when I bought my first, but mid-noughties for sure. I have two, but only because my original got chewed by an over-enthusiastic pointer puppy when I had been gralloching deer with it and left it one the kitchen draining board awaiting washing late one evening!! I therefore have a working knife with a "customised" handle and an intact one, both with the upswept blade shape, which I particularly like. The knife is small but extremely well formed - the handle has grippy inserts in just the right places. the steel takes and keeps an exceptional edge - took mine to the US recently and lent it to a friend while we were preparing a venison supper one night-he was amazed at the sharpness of the blade and general cutting ability of the knife. Its pretty much perfect for carcase prep, etc, but may be a bit small and definitely too light for general chopping and camping tasks. I wish they also made a bigger, longer bladed version - if they did I would have one of those too, but for a true hunting knife this little blade will do all you are likely to realistically need.
