Having watched some very positive reviews of various Rough Rider knives on YouTube, I have to say I was initially a little disappointed in this one, as there are several problems with it. The item description says "amber jigged bone", but the knife I received is a dirty yellow rather than the more orange colour pictured. It's not a bad colour, but it's not what I expected. The knife has a pen blade where I expected a coping blade, but on closer inspection I think the pen blade is cropped in the photo so it looks a bit like a coping blade. The pen blade also has a slight vertical indentation, as if the metal was perhaps rolled out with uneven pressure. The small clip point blade is very difficult to open, as the notch is too close to the joint. With some lubrication and a lot of playing, it has improved a little, but I can't see it ever being easy to open. The points of the two smaller blades both rest slightly proud of the handle when closed, so may catch on things in your pocket, and it's even possible to cut yourself on them when the main blade is open. Blade alignment isn't very good; the pen blade touches and rubs against the main blade, so the highly polished finish won't last. The blades are sharp out of the box and seems to be holding the edge well, so it will likely do a good job of whittling. I think this is an older model and I gather from YouTube reviews that Rough Rider have improved quality in more recent knives, so it won't put me off trying others. I bought the classic carbon II Wharncliff knife in the same order, and I think that is of much higher quality. Despite all the problems, this is still a nice little knife for the price. I even think it's growing on me as the problems give it a bit of character and a handmade feel, so won't be sending it back.
Really impressed with this blade considering the price. Main blade is really well crafted, but a little disappointed that the second blade is really difficult to prise away from the handle, can't gain enough purchase. Apart from that its a great size, great weight, looks smart
This is a great little knife that takes a great edge... a whittling sharp edge that hasn't needed touching up yet. It was edc sharp out of the box with nice even bevels , to get it whittling sharp didn't take long at all. All 3 Rough Ryder whittlers I have bought have been the same good quality fit and finish and edc sharp ,if you're after a traditional whittler theyre great knives for small whittling projects on the go and much more comfortable to whittle with than their carbon ii whittler with the fancy uncomfortable thumb splitter swedges!?.... and it's cheaper. Great service from HH as always.
I bought this because I've been unable to find a split-back whittler anywhere else. I wasn't expecting this level of quality, it far surpassed my expectations. Fit and finish is extremely good - not perfect but I've bought knives 5x the price that are no better. The only minor issue is the 2nd clip point should really be a coping blade, but I'm not complaining for the price. Overall it's a lovely little knife in a pattern you don't often see.
This is my first experience of a split-back-spring knife. It's clearly a feat of engineering to sort that out. Overall, for the money this is a brilliant knife. Thick, strong main blade. Sharp. Well finished considering the acknowledged difficulty of this pattern. For some reason it doesn't quite float my boat as much as my previous Rough Riders (especially the white bone Barlow which is gorgeous). Maybe just pattern preference. Worth the money certainly. Heinne Haynes service excellent again.
Recieved my Pair of RR Amber jigged bone whittlers at 11:30 am the next day after selecting express delivery. Whittlers arrived perfectly pack . Fit & Finished when compared to my Amber jigged bone Case Russlock nothing the RR is exactly the same for alot of money less. My Thanks to all the staff of Heinnie Haynes excellent service excellently delivered. William
Not a bad word to say against this knife Fit and finish is excellent, no gaps anywhere and a beautiful colour on the scales No blade rub which is unusual for a three blade knife Has the split back, a spring for each of the two smaller blades tapering down to were the main blade uses both springs, very nicely done Absolutely stunning, have seen knives five times the cost that aren't finished as well Really, really pleased with this one, an absolute stunner Usual fantastic service from Richard and the guys at Heinnie
Very good value for money. Sharp and easy to keep an edge. Nice inexpensive carving knife, UK friendly and well made. Performance is excellent on most woods as long as material is not really hard, like hard maple, for instance. Classic proven pattern and many good things said below. HH, super quick delivery.
