Rough Rider's line of traditional pocket knives has a very attractive and incredibly tough handle material. The Rough Rider Denim Canoe uses a Micarta with a Denim base. Plus like all Rough Riders the quality is exceptional. Both blades snap back into the closed position, indicating that the non-locking slip joint mechanism is precisely put together. The blades are also under three inches so the knife is classed as UK friendly carry.

    Good build quality, poor design

Posted by Trunky McNoseface on 12th Aug 2021

The build quality of this knife is exceptional for the price. It's sadly let down by shockingly poor design- the designer appears to be an 11 year-old boy- it's all bling that gets in the way. Everything has huge ugly swedges, which push the nail nicks back down the blade so that you get less leverage. The nail nicks themselves are overly-showy match strike nail nicks, which are ugly and provide extremely poor purchase due to being rounded off. The stamping on the bolsters is butt-ugly and completely unnecessary too. If someone took "Andy Armstrong" outside and made him play in the sandpit while the production engineers, who seem to know what they're doing, handled things, this would be a much nicer knife. Without the swedging, with plain nail nicks in more sensible places and without the ugly engraving on the bolsters, this would be a phenomenal knife- the bling not only makes it ugly, but less functional. A shame, it's solid, the build is good and the carbon steel blades get lovely and sharp.

    Great looker

What a stunning little pocket folder this is. Fit and finish belies the very reasonable price tag! I combined mine with a quality slip case for a very special gentleman's edc look.

    Good production quality, amatuerish design

Posted by Ancipital on 12th Apr 2021

Good- blades seem to be highly polished carbon steel, not stainless as listed. Build quality is decent- certainly better than the average case. Factory grind is acceptable. Bad- one thing I don't like about it is the massive and somewhat stupid-looking swedging on the blades. If that wasn't there, the nail nick could be further towards the tip and thus mechanically easier. It's weird. Rough Rider seem to have pretty good production, but their design seems to be letting them down on the basics a lot of the time. On "traditional" patterns like canoes, this stuff is not rocket surgery. People who add flourishes ("our own take") without understanding how the product works should go and stand in the corner. Oddly, this knife would be a lot better (stronger, more ergonomic and easier to open) without the match striker nail nick and swedging- but then it wouldn't look so blingy, I suppose. It's like the factory are very professional but a not very bright 12 year-old is in charge of design. Still, this is a perfectly decent and sturdy little beater for the price, to carry in situations where it may get lost/stolen etc.. I have flushed all the black crap out of the pivots, lubricated it and will put a slightly more refined edge on it and it should work nicely. It will bug me slightly that it could have been a far better knife for the same or less money if it hadn't been messed around with as much.
