    A tough knife to review

Posted by Jason on 5th Jul 2013

This is a tough piece of kit to review. Whilst non-locking, it's hard to close so unlikely to shut on your fingers. All round it's exceptionally rugged, and does indeed appear to be of similar quality to the one I inherited from my grandad. However, here's the but: out of the box the blade was not only blunt, which is no biggie as knives sometimes do arrive dull, but the real issue was that the edge was not even straight and neither was the grind line. It took two hours of patiently working through several stones from 240 to a 5000 to get a decent edge on this, because first I had to reset the angle of the grind to a more sensible 20 degrees from the 34 or so that it arrived with. Now it's properly set though the steel feels like it will keep a good cutting edge through hour upon hour of whatever you throw at it (so far just a little wood carving for me) this is definitely a tool for life - if you're willing to do the initial honing work.

    bombproof

The pivots were MUCH too stiff when I got my last one. I beat it hard with a piece of two by two, a metal chisel and mini-sledge hammer. It now works excedingly well! Then I just had to sharpen the wavy ground blade to get an edge, which now shaves. Very hardcore! The folder most likely to work having fallen down the mountain I reckon.
