The John Nowill British Pattern Survival Knife is a British-pattern survival knife is made in Sheffield to original British MOD specifications. The blade is made from phosphated Carbon steel and measures 17.5cm (7in) long and 0.6cm (¼in) thick, with strong black fibre scales, held to the tang with black-coated copper rivets.

It's never going to win any beauty contests, but it more than makes up for that in its all-round usability. This is a hefty tool, designed to be used, and constructed to last. It has a balance in the hand that can only be appreciated in the flesh, but once you’ve put your trust in this companion, it should last you a lifetime.

The knife is supplied with a sturdy black leather sheath which is designed to be worn on the left side of the body. The blade is stamped with the NATO number:
4240-99-127-8214
J.ADAMS 1999
...and the MOD broad arrow.

    Interesting tool

I think calling this a survival knife doesn't really describe what it is. A solid, all round tool is maybe more like it.
It's a solid lump that's rough and ready. If you expect a razor sharp knife with great fit and finish out of the box you will be disappointed. When it arrived I doubt that the edge could have cut toast let alone anything else. It could have probably bludgeoned it to death though. I actually liked that through, it feels like a project to get it into a good state. Also due to the price and the solidity of it I am not scared of buggering it up if I don't do it right, like I would be with a more fancy knife.
I wanted a knife that would last and would let me use and abuse it, and I feel that this might be it.

    The Real Deal

This is what a survival knife should be. From fine work to building a shelter, tough as nails. This is essentially a sharp crowbar. Carbon steel that holds its edge, so needs looking after but hey, you get nothing for nothing. They are heavy, but dont let that put you off. I have owned one since the 1990s, used and abused, it never failed. Might just buy another. They are better than many knives several times the price.
