      Does the job

Posted by Mike on 12th Aug 2020

Gerber dime is a small pocket friendly multitool that gets the job done , most of the time ? You have to remember this is a light duty tool ! Your not going to be able to build a Spitfire with this !

I have had ,I think four of these from purchase and lost two but the other two have been replaced at least twice under warranty from defects namely the scissor spring !
It's strange as I have also got the leatherman squirt ps4 ,almost twice the price of the dime and they too have the same weakness of scissor spring bar failures !

The thing to remember is the Gerber Dime is so much cheaper because it's made for Gerber in China ? And this tool I can tell you is not the quality of the leatherman squirt ps4 ,hands down no question about it ! But it is a good little edc multitool to carry on you and I have found it no less handy than the squirt ps4 ! Infact with the package opener it's maybe of more use in general ?

Both are plier based tools and the leatherman just blows this away no question about it, that's no supprise as it's what leatherman do best ! The dime does look cool in stealthy black and that feeling you get when you loose something is much less with a dime ?

Gerber dime is as said a China offering but you do get the Gerber no quibble warranty that is awesome and Gerber try their best to equal that of leatherman in this area so as said when it breaks just send it back to fiskers (who own Gerber) and you will get sorted ,they have replaced mine two or three times with boxed new ones ! So I have no problem owning Gerber USA multitools

To sum up the dime is about half the price of the squirt ps4 ! It's not as well made ,but both have failed with defects too , both have outstanding warranties and I have replaced both without hesitation when needed !

I will mention also that HH have as always provided a stunning purchase experience with a delivery service that puts them in a class of their own

Snapped after 2 bouts of very light use

Do not bother with this tool, it's made of the softest metal. I snapped two tools on it with very little force.

      Good enough.

Posted by Leigh on 1st Jun 2020

      Leatherman PS4 £45.
      Gerber Dime £25.
So anyone who's expecting PS4 performance needs to have a quiet word with their expectations. Ok, so I own one PS4 & two Dimes. I use the Dimes much more than the PS4.
Why? Because if I break or loose it I just replace it.
Also, to me it is not a stand alone tool. It's an EDC that compliments my Swiss Army Knife (Huntsman). My SAK has better blades & scissors, but, and it's a serious but, there are tasks that it can do that my SAK can't. Try extracting a fiddly fuse out of a cars fuse box sometime or picking up a small screw. That is when you will quickly develop an appreciation for the Dimes spring loaded Pliers. Also dead useful for picking up something I'm not certain of.
The package opener is fantastic. Screwdrivers are good enough. The scissors are a bit meh, but they only get used on things that I really don't want to blunt my SAK sissors on, like sandpaper.
Blades not brilliant but I mostly use it as a scraper as anyway.

      So should you get one?
      Yes.

      Update

Posted by John on 3rd Apr 2019

I've had my Dime for 15 months now, so I thought I'd do a wee update on my original review.

As I expected the paint is coming off on the handles and I've just lost a second screw on the handles, the blade and package opener are mint condition, both hold a good edge, scissors are working fine but the pliers have never been very good from the start, the bottle opener is loose but still works, all ok with file and screwdrivers, I've never used the tweezers.

I've used this daily for 15 months and it's still working, if I lost it would I buy another one?

Without hesitation, it's a good EDC at a fair price, it's not perfect but perfect costs a lot more!

      get the leatherman PS4

Posted by bill on 21st Oct 2018

Had one of these awhile back and loved it for the first couple weeks, its very compact and dont even notice it on the keys, but then the scissors just completely snapped off when pulling them out, the thickness of the metal connecting them is almost nothing. I expect the other functions would have followed suit but I swapped it for the leatherman PS4 which is almost identical but seems better made. I suppose if you only used the bottle opener and knife etc it may last awhile longer but I think the leatherman is worth the extra money. Only downside is not having the external bottle opener but its not the end of the world. Bear in mind both of these tools are very compact and if you have massive hands it might frustrate you trying to get the tools out.

      Its fine.

Posted by rook on 24th Jun 2018

Had the black model for 9 months now. The paint is rubbing off so it looks a bit scruffy, but everything else is just fine. The blade doesn't come very sharp, but I've used the scissors (which work just fine for me) and package opener much more and they were fine out of the box. The file was pretty much useless, but this is probably down to the black coating.

The travel model has a much more sensible colour scheme, and loses the not-very-useful blade. If it had anything more useful than the stupid hook, I'd definitely recommend it over the standard dime.

      Dont waste your money

Posted by Marcus on 18th Jun 2018

Just dont bother, build quality is poor, the scissors don't work the packet opener was blunt the small screw driver chipped on first use.
Just buy an SAK, less expensive but far superior quality
Would still have been disappointed if this novelty had been half the price, such a waste of money!

      decent tool

Posted by Dimitar on 18th Jun 2018

this in my opinion is a ecent small multi toool. it is small enough for "fit and forget" use, by which I meanto place it on ones keys for everyday EDC. Kudos to Henny's for getting itnext day. Placed my order 21:04 on the Friday and it was with me the Monday 08:22
