Much of the byrd Knife Line is being upgraded through a process called C.Q.I. or constant quality improvement. As the line broadens, existing models are receiving upgraded enhancements such as improved ergonomics, four-way pocket clips and high performance full-flat ground blades.

The Robin 2 G-10 is refreshed with these new features. Its mid-size makes the Robin 2 an easy knife to carry everyday in an office our outdoor environment. Its full-flat ground blade is high-carbon 8Cr13MoV stainless steel with a comet-shaped hole for one hand opening/closing. Jimping (crosshatching) dots the spine, making a textured section where the thumb rests, creating tactile resistance that restrains the folder from sliding and slipping when cutting.

The handle is made of a front and back G-10 scale set over a stainless liner. G-10 is an epoxy-filled laminate with a weave-texture similar to cloth. It provides secure and steady grip when cutting, resists chemicals, oil and temperature extremes. The welcome addition of a four-way clip offers the option of carrying the folder tip-up/tip-down or left-right-handed and a lanyard hole located at the back of the handle accommodates a secondary-retentive thong or cord.

Custom knifemaker David Boye's dent feature is a half-moon-shaped snip of steel removed from the lock's release lever as an added safety feature to the back-lock.

    A great value mid-sized folder

Posted by Alijami on 6th Mar 2016

I don't like pocket clips so the first task was to remove it. One screw was reluctant and twisted my cheap T5 bit. I'm sure I'm seen previous reference to this aspect on Byrd. Not sure whether its overtorquing on assembly or an unnecessarily strong thread lock. Once the clip is removed only the holes are visible, there is no clip recess to spoil the appearance, this being the G10 model not the FRN. Some reviews don't find the G10 grippy enough but for its mid-sized duty IMHO its more than adequate. Personally I prefer the understated appearance of the G10 model compared with the FRN model. Next task is to mod it to be non-locking by filing a ramp on the tang latch. A feature of the blade is the generously sized (and gimped) finger choil. Provides great finger protection whatever grip is adopted. A consequence of this is that the cutting edge length is compromised. Its quite close to being on the short side. Possibly the Meadowlark might better suit anybody bothered by this. Personally I don't like the mid position stop on some non-locking knives, for example the Tern. The Robin does not have a mid position stop. It has a lanyard hole unlike the Tern and many similarly sized Spydercos. Did I say it was sharp out of the box. Do bears.... All in all a great buy which will be a regular carry in its locking modded guise.
