    Reserved judgement.

Posted by Derek W. on 7th Jan 2019

I'm having a tough time with this knife because, although I'm a big fan of SAKs, this oddly sculpted Victorinox/Wenger hybrid is good and bad together.

The range of tools is perfect. It houses nothing I won't use regularly. Indeed, the scissors are slightly better than the traditional SAK ones (micro serrated blades, integrated spring); the large screwdriver locks open once you apply some pressure to the screw head (thanks to Richard of HH for setting me right on that) and the corkscrew has been replaced with a sturdy, functional Philips head driver - a corkscrew is only any use for keeping the spectacles screwdriver safe as far as I'm concerned. If you buy a bottle of wine and don't have a way of opening it, you can't be overly invested in the idea of wine, can you?

Anyway, the other tools are just what SAK owners and users have come to expect in their functionality BUT I have a problem with the yellow scales which just don't quite match the steel skeleton in a couple of places, leaving some uncomfortably 'sharp' plastic edges.
Whenever I take delivery of a new knife, I spend time with it in my hands to acquaint myself with where everything is, so it quickly became obvious that this isn't made with the same care, precision and attention to detail I associate with SAKs.
I don't believe this issue is peculiar to my knife and it won't stop me carrying or using it in the same way as any of my other knives, but it's something to be aware of and has resulted in the loss of one star. I might be a bit harsh in this regard since it would probably be worth half a star in reality, but I can't deduct .5, so it has to be a whole one.

So, in summary, everything steel in this knife is up to Victorinox's usual standard while the 'synthetic' components leave a little to be desired. Oh, and I miss the inlaid steel crest.

As hoped, HH delivered the Evogrip 18 to me within 24 hours and I have received (from Richard) outstanding after sales help for the screwdriver query I emailed in. Long may such service continue.

Sub Standard on behalf of Victorinox

Posted by C David on 29th Oct 2018

Confused as to why this doesn't show as a purchase in my history with Heinnie Haynes, as I was signed in and paid via PayPal, so everything should be in order...

    Regardless, onto the review...

Quite disappointed with this model. The tool setup offers me exactly what I require and nothing extra and the accessibility is great too.
Unfortunately, the side plates and scales that are mounted on them are oversize creating, not so much, hotspots but instead "hot" parallel edges all the way around.
Upon opening the bubble envelope I found that the Victorinox flat packaging had already been opened so I can only assume that it had been sent out once before and the previous customer was unhappy with the product too.

Naturally assuming this was a fault I searched high and low for close up pictures and reviews. I found a review on USA site which complained about the same thing.

It appears that the model is EXACTLY as Victorinox intended, which is pretty poor of them because it's way below the standard that people expect of them.

I've chosen to keep the knife because of the perfect selection but won't be entertaining any of these Vic/Wenger crossovers until Victorinox improve their game.

    Versatile and compact EDC

Posted by Stevo on 29th Jun 2017

Some time ago, Victorinox absorbed rival SAK maker Wenger and thankfully kept many of their unique innovations. The scissors, for instance, have a more robust spring and tiny grippy serrations. The handle contours and rubber inserts offer superb handling qualities. And the yellow colour makes it quite visible, even in dim light. The utility available thanks to the thoughtful tool selection makes this SAK a logical choice for travel (suitcase, not carry on, when flying), outdoors activities, DIY, or even an appropriate work environment. And of course it is UK friendly, so EDC with the usual discretion. A small LED light clipped to the keyring is handy. The light quickly detaches, for separate use. At 1/4" shorter than the popular 3-1/2" Victorinox models, the compact closed length is a bonus. Mind, there is only one knife blade, but you can easily pair this up with a small slipjoint folder, or a friction folder like the popular Svord Mini Peasant or an Opinel No. 6 with the lock removed for a lightweight useful secondary pocket tool. This model is very similar to the Victorinox Huntsman, which in some ways I prefer. As ever, research and read reviews before you buy. Take the time to evaluate and understand what people say in their reviews. Opinions vary and some information may be biased or ignorant and therefore misleading. HH has helpful blogs if you are new to this. Overall, I recommend this model. HH delivery and customer care is second to none. Excellent company.

    Perfect EDC ?

Posted by lostsheep on 9th Dec 2016

I have several knifes that I use to teach scouts, whittling, food preparation, etc; This is the one knife that is always carried on my belt pouch for small cutting, sawing and other tasks that require a multi tool. The yellow handle makes it easier to find. Embedded with non slip rubber the handle increases safety, performance and efficiency when working in the wet.
