Drawing inspiration from the traditional knife of the Chokwe people of Central and Southern Africa, the original Spyderco Chokwe was a revered member of Spyderco's Ethnic Series of knives. The Watu continues this proud tradition, translating the original ethnic pattern into an even smaller, handier form.

Its distinctive triangular blade is full-flat-ground from CPM® 20CV stainless steel and paired with an open-backed, coffin-shaped handle with full, skeletonized stainless steel liners, a high-strength Compression Lock® mechanism, and stunning carbon fiber/G-10 laminate scales. These features are complemented by a reversible deep-pocket wire clip that offers a choice of left or right-side, tip-up carry.

Excellent knife - once its problems were sorted

Posted by Nightoil on 26th Feb 2024

Ordered from HH in May 2022. Date code on the carton was April 2020. Bubble wrap was unsealed. Fingerprints on the blade. A repeat return item? Turns out this particular example had the dreaded lock stick, which no amount of break-in would eradicate. Running the locking surfaces lubricated or dry made no difference. I pondered returning it to HH for replacement. They were showing no stock so decided to try and sort it myself. Dismantling the knife and smoothing off the locking surfaces had NO beneficial effect. The stop pin was already smooth and uniform in diameter. Eight weeks in, I discovered that loosening the L-side pivot screw around 1/16 turn reduced the tab's locking depth sufficient to eliminate sticking, without inducing lock rock. Bending the lock bar outwards very slightly solved the problem, with the pivot screw still available for fine-tuning. Locking depth is a determining factor in lock stick. That said, this is a well-made knife. Dismantled multiple times, it snaps back together accurately every time. Has a bushing pivot, phosphor-bronze washers and a ceramic detent ball. The scale-facing sides of the stainless steel liners are prone to corrosion from trapped water. A thin smear of grease helps protect them. The problem of the choil apex slamming into the finger tip when the blade drops shut was definitely an issue for me. Practice, finger position and timing solved the problem. The 20CV is quite hard to sharpen and holds a 30 degree edge well. With its problems solved (perfection teaches you nothing!), turns out to be an excellent knife. The CF / G-10 laminate scales are comfortable and wear well. The Watu's design is controversial. I like it - sort of a Cyber-Delica. A slick, smooth-running knife with a high fidget factor. Actual measurements. Edge length: 7.4 cm. Spine thickness (at spine apex): 2.45 mm. Handle thickness: 10.4 mm. Weight: 84 g. Excellent shopping experience with HH (apart from the unfortunate traces of previous handling and old production date).

    Watu looking’ at?

Posted by Chris in Hove on 11th Oct 2023

Strange looking for sure, but the handle is neutral and surprisingly comfortable for my XL hands. The blade is the main event, though, and is both super slicey and a super steel. The 20CV takes an amazing edge with ease, and is really just an improved wharncliffe in profile.

    Very Slicey

Extremely happy with my choice. This is certainly the sharpest knife I have had out of the box, it will cut kitchen roll paper. Quality is excellent, it comes drop shut without any need for breaking in . As always Heinnies service was exemplary.
