SOG Power Access Deluxe

I have had many multitoools over my 27 years as a firefighter. I now work on special effects ts and the SOG serves me very well indeed. Amazing pliers, best I've used.

Very pleased with this product, always bought Leatherman before this, quality is as good and the pliers are much better.

An interesting tool, bought to add to my collection of multi-tools and pocket knives. I like the powerful pliers action which is very smooth, The selection of tool offered is very comprehensive although the file is singularly unimpressive. My SOG Power Access Deluxe arrived with the scales slightly misaligned when the tool is closed but that does not detract from the operation of the tool. It does, however bring the QC process into question. I have tried single handed opening of the main and serrated blades and whilst it can be done with some care, it is hampered by the thinness of the blade which deflects into the body. The narrowness of the blade leaves the thumb doing the opening perilously close to the blade edge. The serrated blade is on the opposite side of the frame to the main blade and therefore has to be opened with the left hand if trying to use it single handed or the blade will be facing into the users body. Single handed closing is not possible as the blade needs to be pushed back into the case while holding the lock release. The blade locks are tensioned by a strip of steel left behind in the scales when the slots each side of the strip are cut out at manufacture. On my model this was far too tight for smooth operation and easy release and I needed to adjust the tension on these strips to obtain easy and safe closure of the blades. The main blade was not what I would call sharp on arrival and needed significant honing to get a good edge. This might be intentional by the manufacturer as, in my view a misguided, liability limiting feature. The Chisel blade only had a primary grind and looked more like a one sided wide screwdriver blade on arrival. I have added a secondary grind and honed it and it now cuts although the initial grind angle is such that the sides of the scales meet the surface being cut if the primary grind angle is used as a cutting guide. The bit holder is very stiff to remove from its plastic case although I suspect this is to prevent loss as the end of the holder in which it sits is proud of the sides of the sheath pocket. My solution is to use the bit driver to twist and push it out of the plastic case. In reality users would have the bit holder open on the knife if they were going to use the bits so this is not a big deal. The sheath is of good quality thick nylon and has MOLLE style straps on the rear but I cannot confirm they are a full MOLLE system. None of the above make the tool unusable but it is clearly not of the quality of Leatherman or Gerber even though it is nearing their price points. I am pleased to have it in my collection and have got used to its characteristics after using it for a while. The really good points are the pliers, the narrow knife blade which is ideal for intricate whittling, and, most of all, the fact it will drive standard ¼” bits from the centre of the tool.

All I expected, and more. Every component machined to perfection. If you’re prepared to spend close to a hundred quid, this multitool is your guy, no question. It’s full of the kind of user-friendly details the other manufacturers don’t bother with. Get one. It’ll be your friend for years

I have had a SOG geared multitool for over 25 years and it does all that is asked of it. Bought this one as a present for my son and as he is not the strongest individual, I felt that the geared mechanism would be of more help to him. He is chuffed to bits.
