The manufacture of Puma knives dates back to the mid 18th century in Solingen, the knife capital of Germany, when Johann Wilhelm Lauterjung trademarked the Puma name in the knife makers role of Solingen.

The Puma Waidblatt is a stunning example of the quality craftsmanship that has seen the Puma knife company achieve great succes over the past century and a half.

The blade is a hefty slab of 1.4116 stainless steel with a Rockwell hardness of 55-57 meaning it is easy to sharpen and will withstand some heavy use. The handle is made up of two scales of stag bone which accommodate the full tang design. The finger guard, butt end and liners are brass.

It is supplied with a dark green, leather belt sheath.

    The best knife I own

Posted by John on 1st Feb 2021

The waidblatt is a amazing piece of handcraft manship. Kono San has pretty well covered it in his three reviews. I brought mine back in1983 as the superset with a small knife on the sheath. I must disagree with the comment on military use as classic Puma were a popular choice in Vietnam. I've been collecting for all my life and have a large collection with all the usual suspects and a few custom bits, to be honest my waidblatt surpasses them all. It makes things like my Spartans and Tops look like toy's. Don't be fooled by the fine finish this knife can soak up the hammer, it will build shelter and hides, skin and prep large game, process fire wood and even dig holes if you need. I suspect most buyers will be collector's like myself though. In my opinion a knife collection without a Waidblatt and a White hunter is not a serious one. One other hunting piece missing of the list in the previous reviews is the boar spear, just in case you fancy going head to head with a wild boar, talk about crazy. I do think the older ones are a bit better made, mine is carbon steel with chrome plating to help keep rust away. The press stud fasterners on the sheath are a little disappointing, mine are brass clogballs and totally silent. The click of a stud alerts everything to your presence in a still forest. Before you spend big money on your next knife I recommend that you consider a Waidblatt. Finally they are very fairly priced and have actually come down in real terms since I bought mine 39 years ago. If you have not used Heinnie before they are totally trustworthy, you will not find a better company.

A Cluster of fine German craftsmanship.

Although it sure cost me a fortune, I'm more than delighted with this German Beauty. This is my 4th Puma knife and I also own R¼demann40 with beautiful stag scale, Tradition Knife and White Hunter 240 Jubilee Edition. For its size (only 33cm in total), this knife is extremely chunky and heavy! Waidblatt is known as one of the 4 Hunting Side Arms produced by Puma Solingen (Hirschf¤nger, Nimrod, R¼demann and Waidblatt), and also one of the most sought-after blades by hunters as well as knife collectors. The wide and thick blade with obtuse edge makes this knife an ideal hacker and it also serves as a mercy ki**r of some large game. It is a beautiful, yet very robust German hunting knife with a beefy blade born to rule in the woods.

    A Mercy Killing Queen.

Along with White Hunter designed in 1950s, Waidblatt is another iconic classic hunting knife that represents Puma. No seller makes this knife available yet here in Japan, so I've had mine shipped directly from Germany. Now holding in my hand, I see that despite its size this knife is EXTREMELY chunky and heavy! A wide and thick (approx. 8 mm) blade point makes it an ideal mercy killer by creating a deep and wide wound with one stab and it helps the quicker death of game through faster loss of blood. Waidblatt was originally designed to hack rather than slice so it has an obtuse blade edge, but mine came with a decently sharp edge and it can slice an A4 sheet of paper with little effort. It is also known as one of the 4 Hunting Side Arms developed by Puma Solingen (Hirschf¤nger, Nimrod, R¼demann and Waidblatt) and so far, I've been able to procure R¼demann 40 with beautiful genuine stag scale handle and now I'm on hunt for the rest of two. It is a beautiful, yet robust German hunting knife with a real beefy blade and though it cost me a fortune, I'm delighted to have it in my collection. A dark green knife sheath made of genuine leather is also a piece of art and it best matches this German Beauty.

A Cluster of fine German craftsmanship II.

What really makes me feel good about a knife with staghorn handle is that it is very rich in originality; meaning you are the ONLY person in the world with your knife ! Each stag handle is different in shape, color and texture and such originality perfectly fits Waidblatt, a very unique knife totally distinct from all other knives. Waidblatt is a blade specialized in hunting and hunting only ! It is not to be mistreated as a multi-purpose tool or even combat knife. Mr. Walter Frevert, a chief designer of this legendary knife and avid hunter himself, had only one thing in his mind; hunting. Its classic look with precision-cast nickel silver hilt and pommel may make you think that Waidblatt is just a collectors' piece and only serves as a drawer queen, but just like any Puma knife made in Solingen, it is a bona-fide hunting knife with considerable heftiness. It weighs about 580g without sheath and it is one of the biggest and heaviest knives Puma Solingen offers. Another factor that makes Waidblatt a truly original knife is the Handarbeit or "Handmade" quality. While holding mine in my hand, I can see some "imperfection" in it without compromising with quality and functionality, and this tells me that my knife is the only one in the world and there is none like mine ! I'm more than happy with my German Beauty.
