For years, Petzl have set the standard for hands-free lighting on the move. Their head lamps have been found in use everywhere – underground, up mountains and on paths and trails around the world. Their lights have never been heavy, but always been extremely well manufactured.
As LEDs have become more powerful, and battery life better, Petzl have been able to shrink their technology into this, the Petzl Bindi. It’s a tiny, ultralight powerful head (or neck!) lamp which fits in the palm of your hand.
Weighing in at a tiny 35g (that’s the same as four pound coins), you certainly won’t be weighed down by this little beauty. Mounted on an elastic shock cord, the lamp itself is held in a polymer mount, so that it can be swivelled up or down to focus light on the task at hand. It’s bright enough for walking, running or cycling, with a duration to suit. There’s even a red mode, to preserve your night vision.
There are five light modes:
Red constant = 1 lumen, 2.5 metre range for 33 hours
Red flashing = visible at 400 metres for 200 hours
White low = 5 lumens, 6 metre range for 50 hours
White medium = 100 lumens, 23 metre range for 3 hours
White maximum = 200 lumens, 36 metre range for 2 hours
The reserve mode runs at 3 lumens for 90 minutes, when your battery is almost exhausted.
The 680mAh battery is built in to the torch, and charged via the USB A to micro USB lead provided. A handy status lamp shows the state of the charge – red – orange – green – to indicate low – medium – full charge. Flat to full takes about four hours. The lamp can be locked off to prevent accidental pocket use. The Bindi is certified weather resistant to IPX4.
A neat design, well executed by Petzl.
