The big brother of the famous Mercator knife, equipped with four tools. Besides the blade locked by backlock, this model is equipped with a large corkscrew, which has a so-called "core" in the spiral. The continuous groove prevents the cork breaking while you are pulling. The user will also appreciate an awl for loosening knots or piercing holes and also a can opener. Awl and can opener are forged on strap-lift drop hammers and finally coarsely and finely ground. The blade is made from non-stainless C75 carbon steel and has a finely ground surface. The metal case of the handle is made of burnished steel, giving the knife the aura of a timeless quality product that is manufactured by hand in over 120 steps. Incl. metal eyelet on the handle end and original "Mercator D.R.G.M." stamp on its back. (Deutsches Reich Gebrauchs Muster).

    Fictional story

Posted by Hews on 8th Jan 2021

There once was a German knife maker, the head of victorinox and a tank commander, they were drinking the night away and the tank commander was explaining that although he loved victorinox knives he needed something more “tank like” and beefy for fixing faults on his tiger... the solingen knife maker came up with a plan.... to make the beefiest, most hardcore multi tool he could come up with... he went back to his shop and crafted the messer otter multi tool... the commander was very happy but the Swiss specialist had one change... you must put a corkscrew on the knife as how else will we celebrate this marvellous creation.... the next week all three gentlemen sat in a field watching a beautiful sunset from the roof of the tank, eating cheese, drinking wine and celebrating the marvellous creation that the man from solingen had created

    It's like a vintage motorcycle

Posted by Mally on 13th Apr 2016

I like it, Just don't expect it to be like a modern Swiss Army Knife. It is like a vintage motorcycle or vintage car. It has an old school elegance, but some rough edges. It is very simple in design with some strange and archaic bits and pieces, but it works,. It is big and sturdy and it has a good blade and a tough corkscrew. It has a nice feel to it when in the hand .

    Museum piece

Posted by Dave on 7th Oct 2015

If you need a knife with these tools to actually use then buy a Victorinox Nomad for a third of the price. This knife with its crude riveted construction is a German World War 1 museum piece that should just be handled and displayed. I only use mine to cut up sausages when wearing leather shorts , drinking steins of lager and thinking of frauleins.

    A bit disappointed

Posted by colmac on 19th Oct 2014

I got this knife from HH a couple of weeks ago with their usual very fast delivery. The finish is a bit disappointing with some sharp corners, and one of the rivets standing out a bit from the handle. There is very little snap to the blade - which I don't think is detrimental to a knife of this very large size. The blade locks firmly into place, and I like the positioning of the release lock which is towards the middle of the handle. The tin opener needed sharpening and I found it difficult to use - but that's probably due to my lack of experience with this type of opener. Despite its shortcomings I really like this knife - It's solidly built and feels good in the hand. The carbon steel blade takes a really good edge. The price reflects its hand made and historical origins, but is let down a bit on quality control which surprises me in a German knife.
