No12 Explore - Opinel's first hunting and bushcraft knife.

Produced from Sandvik 12C27 modified stainless steel. It is anti-corrosive thanks to the addition of chrome and requires no special maintenance. Its carbon content of at least 0.40% gives excellent cutting edge.

The handle is made of fibreglass-reinforced polyamide which offers resistance to shocks, extreme temperatures (-40 to 80 °C) and humidity. Encorporated into the tail of the handle is a Pealess Whistle with a power of 110 dB, a combined cutting hook / lanyard hole, and firestarter.

Features the Virobloc safety ring. Invented by Marcel Opinel in 1955, the Virobloc safety ring is fitted to all folding knives from the N° 06. Cut out of stainless steel, the Virobloc has two sections, one fixed and one sliding. In addition to locking the blade open (safety in use), it is now possible to lock the blade closed (safety in transport).

    nice trekking /hiking knife

Posted by Nigel on 17th Oct 2016

Decided to buy this knife as I had a long mountain trek coming up. The blade itself is very sharp out of the box and even after a bit of heavy use 2 or 3 passes with a creamic sharpener and its good to go again. The built in Ferro Rod gives a good shower of sparks enough to get any good dry tinder going. The built in emergency whistle is first class, Very loud as I was able to get attention of people who had wandered a bit ahead of our trekking group very easily with one good blow. Haven't really used the gut hook much except to cut paracord twice which it did with ease. The lock up same as any other opinel works perfect. The blade can sit deep in the handle when closed making opening it just a little awkward. But hey ya cant win em all i suppose. My final thoughts makes a great companion knife for trekking or hiking
