    ONTARIO SP8 SURVIVAL MACHETE

Posted by Andy on 31st Jul 2021

A very interesting tool. Often when I consider a new blade the first thing I ask myself is "Would i be happy to be dropped in a wilderness area with just this tool for a week" . Often the answer is no. The blade is a bit too flimsy-think basic Mora Companion for example. A great blade but you always have a failure issue under the hard use in a survival type scenario. The Ontario Survival Machete answers the question on all Levels. The shape seems a bit odd but a big old knife dosnt really need a tip. You don't use the tip for much so better to replace with a pry bar tip. I took the Ontario out for the day to the local woods. I used it to make a shelter, cleaning off side branches section branches. It cuts well into dead wood but not to axe level. You get a better cut depth with green wood. Splitting wood for the fire is easy. The machete is thick which makes for a great wedge, ideal for splitting. It blows wood apart. Next I went abut carving the components of a Figure of four trap. This is a little more tricky due to the forward weight and distance of the cutting edge from the handle. However I got the job done. Next I used the blade to dig a seep well for water. The square tip acts like an adze in a way and made for fast digging. Its like a mini spade. The saw back on the blade is a little pointless. Its to thick to efficient saw anything but it can make notches. Overall the machete is heavy and robust. You won't break it. If you landed on a desert island and had only this and some skills you would be positive. The sheath is simple and cheap but it holds the knife and is OK. The handle is rubbery and makes for a positive grip. Nothing special but solid and comfy enough. The blade is blackened which im not a fan of. Easily lost on the forest floor or at night. I'm going to spray it orange. Highly recommended
