    MPR3 - Chinese Quality!

Posted by singleagain on 25th Apr 2019

I took a while to decide between MRP1, and between the drop point and the tanto version of the MPR3. Eventually I bought the tanto version of the MPR3 based on the better blade steel, the better clip positions (MPR1 tip up is not quite so deep) and also simply because I did not have a tanto blade in my collection. Before talking about the knife itself, here's a little bit of background information gleaned from the Internet. Jeff Hall, custom knife maker and the owner of Nemesis Knives, was a friend of the late Al Mar. After Al's death in 1992, Jeff acquired the rights to those Al Mar knife designs that had not been produced during his lifetime. So the MPR3 is an Al Mar design, with the MPR' standing for Mar Private Reserve'. This knife is made in China, and none the worse for it. Based on the fit and finish of this Nemesis knife, and the latest offerings from Ganzo, I would say that these companies are now up there with the best in terms of quality control. Earlier Ganzo's such as the 7453 and the 717 were a bit clunky' but I have owned both for about eighteen months and they still work perfectly. The MPR3 is altogether excellent “ I've been all over it with a fine-tooth comb and I can't find a single thing wrong with it. It's very slim and compact, with nice grippy G10 scales, and a solid lock-up. Surprisingly, both blade length and overall length are almost identical to the Spyderco PM2, although the MPR3 is an altogether more streamlined tool. Everything is nicely chamfered, with the thumb ramp and lower blade guard' giving a comfortable secure grip. I particularly like the small, deep carry, four position, pocket clip. The knife is also very light, at 95 grams, or under 3.5 ounces. The fact that both MPR3's feature S35VN blade steel, and phosphor bronze washers is a bonus. They are also truly ambidextrous knives thanks to the back-lock, dual thumb studs and four position clip. And at under £125 I also think that they are a a bit of a bargain. Super-fast service from HH as always.
