This is a simple version of a simple Japanese design, a no nonsense folder with a folded metal handle, non-locking blade and a simple extended tang to open it. The Higonokami style is a friction folder, with no lock, held open by the user’s hand acting on the tang.

You'll appreciate the simplicity of the sparse, Nagao design – there’s nothing on this knife that’s surplus to requirements. The handle is of distressed, folded stainless steel, with a scallop to accommodate the fingers when the blade is open. The blade pivots around a rivet, spaced with a pair of plain brass washers.

Manufactured by Hitachi, Blue Paper Steel was named after the blue paper they packaged the steel in. It is a pure carbon steel with the addition of chrome and wolfran to help resist corrosion and keep the edge for longer.

This version features a clear resin splash finish on either a black or bluse handle.

    Higonokami Splash

Posted by Walter on 18th Mar 2024

Unbelievable ! I highly recommend this beautiful bit of kit. I've always been a big fan of carbon steel. But by far the best carbon blade I've ever had the pleasure of owning is this blue paper steel Higonokami. I was already expecting a scalpel, but inside the box was a light sabre ! As always with HH, their excellent communication and fast delivery is second to none. To say I'm happy is an understatement

Excellent knife suitable for my wife to use.

Service etc is so good that I have already purchased two more knives.

    Average

The blade seems to be decently forged but the grinding is poor. Burrs across the spine, edge is inconsistent and is going to take several hours of sharpening.

    The sharpest ever

Posted by Mark B on 29th Jan 2021

I already have a blade that uses blue paper steel as the centre of a San Mai construction and it is the sharpest I own. This blade is sharper and it arrived already dangerous. Buy this knife right now, don’t argue or waste time thinking, just get one (and a big box of band aids).
