The Higonokami This is very much a “love it or hate it” kind of knife. It’s a simple folder with a folded metal handle, non-locking blade and a simple extended tang to open it. The Higonokami style is a friction folder, with no lock, held open by the user’s hand acting on the tang.

To those who would criticise, it’s a basic design with a fiddly, small, uncomfortable metal handle – which is true, but one needs to look beyond the first impressions, and examine the knife for the work of art that it is.

Others will appreciate the simplicity of the sparse, Nagao design – there’s nothing on this knife that’s surplus to requirements. The handle is perfectly proportioned, single piece of folded brass, containing the blade, with a scallop to accommodate the fingers when the blade is open. The blade pivots around a rivet, spaced with a pair of brass washers, simply etched with radiant lines. The blade itself is from Japanese “White Paper Steel #3”, a carbon steel which is known for its excellent ability to take and hold an edge, together with its reputation for being extremely difficult to forge successfully.

The knifemaker’s ability is evident in this pure and simple design. This version has a black-painted brass handle with a satin finish tanto-style blade.

    Higonokami

Posted by Louis on 14th Aug 2023

I’ve had quite a few of these knives. I use them as a daily carry for work, they get used hundreds of times a day as I do interior fitouts. This one is a beast, was on my wish list for a while. Doesn’t disappoint. Fantastically sharp and hard-wearing. Can’t beat this centuries old design for form and function for my money. Very pleased.

    Lovely Piece of Handicraft

The Nagao Higonokami is an artistic, practical and well crafted folding knife. Comes with an almost perfect edge. You can easily manage to get it hold and maintain a razor edge with a good wet stone. Weight and balance of the product is superb. It's one of the best products that I've purchased. First Class delivery from HH as always. Thank you.
