MecArmy have quickly developed a strong reputation at Heinnie Haynes® for offering products of great quality at very reasonable price points. Like so many products coming out of their factory, the MecArmy EK3R Copper folding knife is a very fine example of their work.

This UK-friendly carry has a non-locking blade in D2 steel. The blade measures 6.75cm, and we very much like the way that the flat ground blade is slightly upswept with a drop point. It opens with no stop, and in the hand, the blade sits well forward, proud of the first finger. It doesn’t quite open with one hand, but the blade cutout give good purchase for a firm handgrip. At 2.3mm thick, the blade has a feeling of solidity.

The handle is copper which gives a stunning look and feel, the two sides of which are hex-bolted together. The stainless pocket clip is designed for tip down, right side carry.

    Finger killer

I wanted to like this knife, but the lack of a half stop on closing is a major oversight. I was trying to open a wine bottle and the blade slammed shut on my knuckle, giving me severe tendon problems. This should be a well designed knife, but it is not. Keep well away if you value your limbs!

    Superb

Things I like about this knife

    1. Fit and finish is excellent.
    2. The copper scales are very nice. The patina is constantly changing as you handle it and can range from the fresh metallic pink of new radiator pipes to a deep duller brown, with some interesting rainbow effects occasionally.
    3. The spring tension is good and firm. Stronger than a Swiss Army knife but not world legal strong.
    4. The blade came hair popping sharp and I like the stone wash finish. I also love the shape.
    5. Nice smooth opening action.
    6. Nice lanyard hole.
    7. Pocket clip works well. Could be a little stronger if I was being picky.

    Things to be aware of;

    1. Despite the cutout for opening this does not open one handed. The spring is too strong and the cutout is positioned in the wrong place and is too narrow. This does open fine two handed though.

    2. Although the blade in Heinnie’s photo and the spec shows it with a D2 blade, mine came with a 12C27 blade. I like 12C27 as a steel so wasn’t too bothered, but this should be listed correctly. D2 would usually be viewed as a higher spec steel.

    3. The pocket clip is set up for right hand tip down carry. It would be nice to be able to change this but that probably would have meant unsightly holes in the nice copper scales.

    4. Be aware that copper is quite soft and scratches easily. Don’t chuck it in a pocket full of spare screws, loose change etc.

Overall I think this is an unusual and nicely finished knife. I would highly recommend it.

    Beautiful knife

Posted by Matthew on 7th May 2020

Very attractive knife, strong and robust yet aesthetically pleasing, copper looks remarkable and contrasts well with the sharp (out of the box) blade. Useful and pleasing pocket clip.

In my opinion this knife is faultless hence I am very happy indeed.
