LionSteel of Italy have developed a reputation for producing high quality knives. 2013 and 2014 saw the development of one-piece construction "Solid" knives - the TR1 and TiSpine models.

This model, the TM1 continues that evolution with the introduction of a lock-back knife. The TM1 is a fine example of LionSteel's "Monolithic" one-piece contsruction, and looking at the knife, one wonders how they have managed to craft a three-dimensional knife handle from one piece of carbon fibre. LionSteel attribute the skill to their four-centreline machining stations, working in unison to carve a solid block of carbon fibre into the tactile form of the handle seen here.

The modified tanto blade is honed from Sleipner steel, with a Rockwell hardness of 60-61. The elegant curve of the belly of the blade allows the user to position the tip exactly where required, and to use the length of the curve for the most precise cutting tasks. Be under no illusion though - this knife is tough - the carbon fibre is strong, and will take the knocks that life will throw at it - but it's so light in the hand, feeling delicate yet sturdy.

The pocket clip can be fitted on either side of the handle. It is fixed at the end of the knife, secured by the tungsten-carbide-tipped glass-breaker, making this knife easily switchable from right- to left-side carry - truly ambidextrous.

The blade is held open by the double spring lock back mechanism, making it a joy to open, with a satisfying "clunk" as it locks into position. LionSteel tell us that this mechanism provides long-term durability. The blade pivots around the precision-engineered IKBS bearing system which is fast becoming standard issue on all decent knives. To make the IKBS pivot, LionSteel mill out a tiny ball race around the pivot point of the blade, which is micrometer perfect to hold a set of ballbearings. The two sides of the bearing hold those balls in place, and the balls in turn allow the blade to pivot with a lovely smooth motion. This truly is a knife to last you a lifetime.

This knife is another designed by Michel 'Molletta' Pensato, who has made a name for himself with his innovative use of software to map out the contours of his knives, before calculating how to construct them from the most challenging and desirable of materials.

The TM1 is available with either a black coated blade or with a satin (silver) finish to the blade, and supplied in a beautifully stitched leather collectors pouch. Either colour looks wonderful, and makes an impressive tool for your collection.

    STUNNING!!!!

    Posted by GRANT.E on 13th Oct 2016

I PURCHASED THE MICARTA TM1 A WHILE BACK AND THAT HAS BEEN AWESOME EXCEPT I HAD THE COATED BLADE VERSION AND ITS BEGINNING TO SCRATCH OFF ETC. SO, I THOGHT ID GET ONE THESE AND NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE OTHER. FIRSTLY IVE HAD THE SATIN VERSION WHICH LOOKS BEAUTIFUL, COMES IN A VERY NICE CASE[NOT SURE IF LEATHER, CANT SMELL LEATHER] BUT VERY NICE. THE CARBON FIBRE LOOKS AND FEELS AWESOME ,I TOOK CLIP STRAIGHT OFF AND PUT GLASS BREAKER BACK ON AND AS USUAL FEELS EVEN NICER NOW. NO LINERS BUT FEELS VERY LIGHT AND STRONG, BLADE WAS SUPER SHARP BUT NONE THE LESS WILL BE GOING ON THE WICKED EDGE TONITE,IT OPENS 'VERY SMOOTHLY' EVEN MORE SO THAN MY OTHER. LIKE OTHERS HAVE SAID THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO UNWANTED PLAY IN THIS KNIFE. TO HOLD,THIS HAS TO BE ONE OF THE MOST FEEL RIGHT KNIVES I OWN, BASICALLY ITS PRACTICALLY PERFECT, WHICH ISNT SAID VERY OFTEN., ALTHOUGH SAYING THAT I GOT THE LION STEEL M4 AT THE SAME TIME AND THAT IS AN AWESOME LITTLE FIXED BLADE AND COULDNT FAULT THAT EITHER ...ALL IN ALL VERY HAPPY CHAPPY AND ILL NEVER HAVE ANY MONEY..LOL .CHEERS NICK AND ALL AT H.H AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK LION STEEL

    Excellent value for money

Posted by Snakeplissken 83 on 22nd Oct 2014

The title of this review is apt, because this knife is one of the finest examples of the craft of knife making I have ever seen. I have owned Rocksteads, Striders, high-end spyderco's and ZT's, Sebenzas, custom knives...you name it. And being perfectly frank and honest, this knife easily holds it's own against them, and in some ways even surpasses their quality. The opening action and lock up is particularly excellent, and is, if anything, better than the lock up on a Sebenza. Yes, you read that right, better than a Sebenza. I was initially concerned about the back lock, but this mechanism has been so beautifully over-engineered that it is as effective as any liner or frame lock. There is zero blade play. And When I say zero I mean ZERO, not the minimal amount we have come to expect from good folding knives that people usually refer to as zero blade play; the blade on the TM1 has absolutely no perceptible movement side to side or up and down. None. Nada. Zilcho. The blade steel (Bohler-Uddenholm's 'sleipner') perhaps doesn't have the wear resistance of some of the more exotic blade steels out there, but is an excellent blend of toughness and edge holding. Edge retention should be somewhere between s30v and 154cm (i.e very good and more than enough for all but a 10 hour shift at the abattoir) while the toughness is almost as much as A2. The carbon fibre handle is, being milled from a solid blank of carbon fibre, a real sight to behold, and it truly sets the TM1 apart from crowd. It's probably the most innovative - and certainly attractive - part of the knife. Overall I am blown away by the TM1. I knew Lionsteel were a great knife company, but this knife has, in my opinion, lifted them into world class territory. Judging by the quality alone, I would have expected this knife to cost more than double what it does. It's the knife bargain of the decade, hence the title of this review. If you are thinking of buying a high-end folder, this really should be at the top of your list, and I speak as a guy who has owned many, many high end folders in my time. Snake.

This is a Superb Knife crafted from the Best materials by expert knife makers, resulting in an Uber High Quality knife. I have had top End production knives CRK Strider Rockstead & custom knives, this knife holds it's own against any of them. Highly recommended!
