The German Eye brand derives from a famous knife making company in Solingen, the heart of historic knife making Germany.

Known for their simple folding pocket knives, the German Eye Clodbuster Junior is a fine example of what they do best. With a non-locking blade of under 7.6cm (3") it is classed as a UK legal carry knife at the discretion of the carrier.

The blade is Solingen stainless steel with a nail notch. The handle is celluloid in a choice of colours, with brass liners and pins.

    Alright, but not great.

Should start by saying that if you don’t like buying Chinese knives, this is a solid choice. Should also mention I can’t comment on long term as I’ll be returning it. The good: Out of the box it seems like a good lightweight workhorse. Very strong back spring and generally good fit and finish. A few very, very minor gaps but they were so slight they’re hardly worth mentioning. Nice tight blade with no wobble, and a generally good handle. Also a nice taper on the blade itself with a good sized nail Nick. I’ve no doubt the steel will take a good edge as well; though it’s not as sharp as I’d like out the box, with one side sharpened ever so slightly more than the other. The not so good: I really want to love this knife, but it’s a bit light for my liking. Quite a glossy finish on the scales too which had a few tiny scratches out the box. Biggest thumbs down for me is that one side of the blade is over ground. Sighting along the blade, there’s a twist from point to base on the cutting edge. I know these knives are handmade and you can expect quirks, but a decent grind is still very important in my view. I’m finding it tough to love after using my Schrade sodbuster... the handle on this is square and not as comfortable, the finish is glossy by comparison which picks up scratches easier, and the ‘walk and talk’ just isn’t as nice in my opinion. The steel may be superior here, (this is what bumped it from 3 to 4 stars for me, but 3 and a half is more realistic), and if the schrade’s a no go because you want a non-Chinese knife, it’s a good, modestly priced option. I found myself preferring the knife that was one fifth of the price of this though. 4 stars. A good enough knife, but not good enough to keep for the money in my opinion.

    Good, but not perfect

I bought this for two reasons. Firstly, it's a sodbuster styleknife, so legal in the UK and a classic. Secondly, Carl Schlieper uses the same all seeing eye' as Taylor's Eye Witness of Sheffield. Over all it's a nice knife in nice materials, but, like many old school, traditional makers, the fit and finish is poor. Gaps, poor fit and scratches on the horn scales sadly let it down. I decided not to return it, but I probably should have. If Schrade can get it right for 7 quid, Schlieper ought to manage for £46!
