The D12 is an oval shaped, fine diamond sharpening steel, ideal for kitchen knives. To ensure a long steel life the surface has been coated with titanium alumina nitrid, which is an extremely hard material.

The C12 steel is ceramic and is used after the diamond steel to obtain a long-term edge. This brand new ceramic steel is made of real ceramic and has got micro-grooves along the entire surface. These grooves will polish the to razor sharpness and clean off the unstable raw edge, making it last longer.

    Why all the negativity?

Posted by Dobeydog on 26th Aug 2020

Ignore all the poor reviews - These are brilliant!!
I have had the same set for MANY years and use them monthly. They are simply fantastic.
I use them on high-end knives like Global and Spyderco. Use them slow...ly and at the correct angle for the knife - not like some TV chef on 'whizz'- and you will see top results.
As for the ceramic one being brittle - ITS CERAMIC..! Treat it gently and it will treat you.
My daughter wants some Wusthof kitchen knives for Christmas and these will be part of the package.
Did I mention that these are brilliant?

    Just over a year on

The ceramic rod has mellowed very little with time and will still rip a very sharp edge in short time on virtually any blade. Unfortunately, for that very reason it languishes in a case and is little used. Wonder if a smooth rod rather than one with micro grooves would work better? I use a DC4 on my Global kitchen knives because the rod is too aggressive.

    Not what I expected!

Posted by Simon B Wilson on 2nd Nov 2013

Had one for 3-months now. Treat the ceramic rod with respect - it is ceramic after all - and it will rip a superbly sharp edge on a kitchen knife. The operative word is RIP! It seems to work just like an old-fashioned steel rather than a ceramic rod and to my mind the effect is coarser than the diamond stone on a DC3 or DC4. Hopefully as it ages it will smooth out its action, but at present I would NOT let it anywhere near my pocket / hunting / skinning knives for this very reason, preferring to stay with a DC4 where the ceramic is much smoother and doesn't produce such a jagged edge. It does a job, but not the one you might expect from the description!

I got both models, the D12 & C12. Both are good sharpeners, however the ceramic rod (C12) is very easy to chip, (small pieces came off during use). D12 sharpener is good but uneven in some places hence 3 star. Think I'll stick to Spyderco in future for sharpening ideas.
