In Norse mythology, Idun was the goddess of fertility,
and responsible for guarding the apples that ensured
the gods eternal youth. To many, she was also a
symbol of love and rebirth, and in a poem she was
referred to as the lover of the gods (ása leika). Unlike
earlier models in the Northern Lights series, NL5 is a
little rounder and softer in form, and therefore an
excellent choice as a hunting knife. The straight, fairly
generous grip in leather gives complete control over
the powerful blade in laminate VG10 steel, and makes
the knife a tool as attractive as it is effective in the
hands of the experienced hunter. I

A world first as regards to the blade - it's in laminated
VG10 steel, where the edge is made of Fallkniven's
now renowned VG10 steel and the sides consist of
tough, all-stainless 420J2 steel. This combination is
unquestionably the best, since it brings together all
conceivable and desirable properties such as
resilience, resistance to torque and edge-durability in
a single blade. With laminate technology one can
expect an additional 20% strength in the form of
resistance to bending, as compared to an ordinary
VG10 blade. This ensures qualities that no other
manufacturer in the world can offer.

The only knife you will ever need

Posted by Bushdave on 14th Mar 2019

Own it now for a decade or so, gets abused like nothing on a regular basis. Went through my learning days as bushcraft instructor, trips over Europe dismantled dears, boars etc , splitted stupid amounts of wood , used with firesteels, I now live full time in a farm so the abuse continues...Still razor sharp still strong the wear ls very minimal it's a reall high quality piece.

    Almost too good

I've had the Idun for a number of years. It cuts and handles well, though with the thick spine can be limiting in some finer chores. It is probably the strongest knife I own. My only criticism is it's price, meaning it often gets left at home with the F1 going instead.

    Excellent

This knife is exceptional quality. It feels great when you hold it . There is a feel of Total grip and control in the handle the central swell give the grip. The overall concept for me is a simplistic work of art.

    Fallkniven NL5 Idun

Posted by Nick on 14th May 2010

The unique handle design makes this a most beautiful knife. The weight and balance feel just right. The steel is good quality and is easy to sharpen. A very elegant piece. The blade is not big with the benefit that the overall length is sensible and less imposing. The sheath is well made of good quality sturdy leather; however beware of the belt loop which will only fit a 1 inch (2.5cm) belt. Unfortunately the sheaths are not made ?in house? so I could not get a bigger belt loop.
