Russ Kommer is a bright young custom knifemaker who was based in Anchorage, Alaska, for many years. Conditions there are rugged, either from the climate or the work folks are doing. He thought a knife that was easy to grip and hard to lose would be a big hit, and since he made the first Bear Claw, he hasn’t been able to meet the demand.

Russ and CRKT teamed up to make the production Bear Claw, a cutting machine that, thanks to the generous size finger hole, acts just like an extension of your hand. It is the perfect emergency cutting tool for anyone who needs to quickly cut rope, webbing or netting, especially if their life is going to depend on it. The Bear Claw is available in two blade styles: Razor-Sharp and full Triple-Point Serrated with pointed tip, plus Triple-Point Serrated with tear drop tip for fast cutting without danger - ideal for law enforcement and emergency rescue personnel. Blades are full-tang, taper-ground AUS 4 stainless steel with a fine bead-blast finish. Friction grooves are placed on the blade spine, choil and near the tip for maximum blade control and safety. The contoured Zytel handle fills the hand neatly. The Bear Claw weighs in at a lightweight but stout 3.2 oz. (The tear-drop-tip model is a bit heavier.)

CRKT developed one of their trademark high-tech sheaths for the Bear Claw that’s only 1.1 oz. of tough, durable, injection-moulded Zytel. It allows efficient quick release of the knife. It features moulded-in threaded fittings for attachment of the wide black stainless steel Teflon plated pocket clip at either end, using the Torx tool and screws provided. The sheath also has a total of seven lanyard holes and belting slots to permit a variety of carry positions, and a lanyard is provided.

    Good but...

Posted by Kota on 28th Nov 2017

I like the knife, and I like the secure hold of the sheath, but securing the sheath onto your belt, even trying to use the cord to tie it down, when you go to pull out the knife, the sheath just comes out, which is frustrating. Plus 2 out of 3 of the holes on the tip end (for screwing in the clip) are no good, you can see the grooves down in the holes, but they're not ineffective, meaning I can only screw in the clip facing one way. Essentially this knife is no good without the sheath (it's not like a folding knife you can just put in your pocket, obviously). Think I might have to clip it in front of me on my belt and use two hands to get the knife out, one holding the sheath on my belt.
The tip doesn't hold well, pretty much straight away I bent the tip pushing the knife back in its sheath.
    Excellent service by Heinnie again.

    Usefull tool

I used to work as a field archaeologist and this was the go to tool when working through root systems. Sharp and easy to use in a tight area. Built to be abused and how.

    Wickedly useful

Posted by Mark b on 10th Oct 2013

I own both versions of this and both are incredibly good. I just used mine to remove a Gordian knot of washing line that had at least 15 layers of very old plastic and natural rope in it. 5 seconds of sawing and it was in tatters on the floor. What a knife!

    Fisherman's Friend

Posted by Aaron on 19th Jun 2009

My old man works solo on a commercial fishing boat. I bought him one of these as a safety knife. Because the tip is blunt, and the blade arched, he wears it unsheathed attached to his oilskins by a lanyard. Always at hand to cut a rope and save his skin. It's been out in the weather for a few years now, but the serrated blade will still laze through a polypropylene rope no bother.
