Colonel Coon knives, named after the Raccoon logo on the handle scale, was originally a maker of knives in the 1960's in Tennessee. The brand is now owned by Smokey Mountain Knife Works who have revitalised some of the most well known models. The Barlow was certainly a favourite back in the day but has continued to be a superb knife design to this day. The Colonel Coon Barlow Walnut has two blades; one pen and one clip point and the handle is a smooth and tactile walnut wood.

I have an occasional thing for Barlow knives, Probably because the first good knife I had as a boy was a Sheffield spearpoint with a long bolster. My father bought it when I was about 8, how times have changed! This is a nicely made and quite handsome knife. Both blades have long pulls which are both on the same side but are still accessible when the blades are closed. There are no large gaps and the springs and liners sit almost perfectly level with the blades open or closed. The back of the blades do sit a very little below the springs and liners when open. At this point having done no work whatever theres no play from side to side in either blade. The only fly in the ointment is the soft spring on the large blade. It opens OK but can't be guaranteed to snap closed all the way and leaves the point of the blade above the liners. Design wise I'd have done away with the "Barlow" script on the bolsters and I'd have liked the the handle to have had a little more verical height. Pretty good knife.
