The Byrd Tern is a non-locking folding blade knife that is legal to carry in the UK. Byrd is a subsiduary company of Spyderco so quality is guaranteed but at a more affordable price range. The Byrd brand therefore makes knives that are perfectly suited to the working "Every Day Carry" environment.

The Tern has a black G-10 handle... a material that is resistant to warping and fading. The blade is held in the open position during cutting by a notched-joint at the knife’s pivot. When closing the blade, the notch produces resistance functionally similar to traditional slip-joint penknife. To enhance control and comfort there’s a deep finger choil which jogs the index finger into position on the bottom of the blade directly under the thumb.

Placing the index finger in the choil, the finger acts as a stop, inhibiting the blade from closing when cutting and allows the user to choke-up closer to the cutting edge with comfort and dexterity. A wire clip positions the folder to carry deep in a pocket, tip-up and ready for use left or right-handed. The Tern has an 8Cr13Mov leaf-shape full flat-ground blade available in a PlainEdge. The handle is assembled with screw-together construction.

    Byrd Tern

Posted by Damian Lord on 21st Mar 2024

Nice little folder, easily deployed with one hand but feels a little small in my large glove hand Came nice and sharp. Clip came off my jeans pocket more than once when sitting. Easier to just put it in the pocket properly. Overall happy with the purchase.

    A quality pocket folder

Posted by Tony on 4th Mar 2024

Great to have a quality folding knife that I can pop in a pocket and forget about until needed. Handy to have, while being slim to carry, but easy to open and hold when required. The grip and finger placement gives confidence the blade won’t slip while in use, while remaining uk legal as a non-locking blade. Postage was fast and well packed, thanks!

    SpyderNo

So it's a SpyderCo UKPK but half the price? The scales are nicer in G10, in my opinion, and the action feels the same. It's a great size plus nice and lightweight along with being very sharp. As something different to a clip point, it's a good design but gets 4 stars as there are cheaper equivalents. The price isn't quite in line with the materials but still better than the big brand option

Super sharp put the box, easy to one hand flip not afraid to beat it up. Exactly what I wanted.

    Byrd Tern

Great little UK legal knife, Byrd maybe the budget friendly version of Spyderco, but this knife is hardly cheap and cheerful. Great one handed opening and arm shaving sharp out of the box. I think I prefer the teardrop design of the Byrd over the Spyderco hole!!

    My favourite EDC

Posted by singleagain on 20th Jul 2022

I bought a Byrd Tern from HH back in May 2021, and it quickly became my favourite EDC - nice and small, weighs nothing and very sharp out of the box (and easy to sharpen). And then, a few months ago I lost it. So I found myself carrying a UKPK and a Civvivi Trailblazer on a regular basis, but eventually decided that I just had to have another Tern. So - ordered yesterday, and it arrived today, even allowing for the fact that those nice people at HH swapped the clip over for left hand carry at no extra cost. (They did that last time too). The only difference that I can see between this knife and the original is that it has a slightly less positive half stop - oh yes, and the price! Such is the world we live in. Thanks again HH, great service as always.

    Tern

Posted by Stu on 28th Jun 2022

I've got a tern I bought in early 2021 and it's my edc work knife I probably use at least every 15 mins every work day . It's been sharpened loads so the blade is down a little compared to when new.but it comes up razor sharp with very little work .today a received a new tern -a back up ,as I love this knife so much and it seams better than a spyderco to me .the new tern is 2 grms Lighter and is slightly different in the back bar spring .the lock up is even better than before . I think the tern just got even better than the perfect it already was.
