The Boker Plus Voortrekker, built as a friction folder, got its name from the Boer pioneers in the Cape region, who began migrating northeast in 1835. The pocketknife was designed by the South African custom knifemaker J.D. van Deventer. It has a D2 blade with a light stonewash finish that doesn't lock when opened. The closed knife has a protruding spur/tang that allows you to open the blade with one hand. When the thumb is placed on the spur while the blade is open, it can be used as securely as a locking knife. The extremely light Voortrekker has a handle of black G10 and does not have a clip, because carrying a clipped friction folder in your pocket is not recommended. Instead, the knife comes with a compact Kydex sheath, so it can be worn as a neck knife.

    Wanted to love it

Posted by Steely on 22nd May 2020

I was a big fan of the original custom and bought this instantly but the blade is really thick behind the edge. Original was a hollow grind that was just a small gripe my biggest problem was that the pivot was overtightened and when i tried to un loosen it it broke and now spins freely. 5 stars of customer service tho

    Well made but not great

Posted by Russ on 14th May 2020

This knife is a good quality item that is well put together and feels very solid. It is a little small for my hands but that is my problem I suppose. It arrived very sharp and with a little work, it was like a razor and has held an edge well after some light cutting work.

So I am impressed by the quality but the design is not ideal. The only pressure that keeps it open is the pressure that your hand or thumb exerts on the "extension bar" (not sure of the technical term but the thin piece of steel that extends from the blade). Otherwise there is no spring or other mechanism. I wasn't expecting a lock as it purports to be UK legal but the blade closes so easily that I wouldn't feel confident doing any serious cutting with it. I would go so far as to say that I think it is dangerous for anything but opening the odd package or peeling oranges. Any serious work would put you at risk of the blade closing on your hand. Perhaps I'm using it incorrectly but I think this is heading for a drawer in the garage which is a shame because it is so well put together.

    Very unsafe

Posted by Half baked on 6th May 2020

Most unsafe knife I have ever used. The ergos due to the tiny handle do not allow you to properly push down the exposed bit that keeps the knife in place, day one and when cutting a cardboard box the exposed tang bit slipped through the skin between my thumb and finger and cut me pretty deep... Poorly designed knife, if handle was slightly bigger probably would of been fine, I fit a medium glove BTW, standard 5 star service from heinnie though

    Great knfe

Well as usual great service from HH, order almost arrived as soon as you click buy.
The knife seems well made, good fit and finish and it clicks into the kydex holster very securely.
The blade is razor sharp out the box. I have heard a lot of people saying you can't get D2 extremely sharp due to the large carbides however some of my sharpest knives are in D2 and I have never had a problem sharpening it , it just takes a little longer than simple stainless steels.
The knife is light and feels good in the hand.
I seem to be getting quite a thing for Boker Plus kniives at the moment especially after getting the Wasabi and I also have a particular fondness of friction folders due to their simple and reliable age old design so for me this knife was hard to resist. Glad I bought it..
Oh I took the ball chain off the sheath and put on a black paracord lanyard with an adjustable grapevine knot and it makes it much more usable.
