    Arthur Wright Ettrick

Posted by Lester on 8th Apr 2021

Beautiful little swayback, with a razor sharp blade. Well finished and ready to work, straight from the package. I like straight edge designs- Lambsfoot, Sheepsfoot- and this small Ettrick is similarly functional, with a more pointed end than the others, for carving and gouging. This one goes straight into the rotation (note to self: try not to lose this one down the settee, with all the salty snack crumbs). When you want a traditional knife.....go to the source;-)

    WOW!

Posted by Felly Da! on 15th Mar 2021

A firm favourite among traditional blade connoisseurs this Ettrick from Wright is just wonderful. I have the Rosewood. It has a bit off a rough and ready to it's construction, to me that's great - you can see the 'handmade' in it. Not to say it's bad, far from it - this is a perfect work knife and at a work price. Fit and finish are a good standard overall. The pull as others mention is very strong - but i can take my time with my tools, it is something to consider if you don't have a fairly good grip though. I was surprisef to find my knife came at a good working sharpness. (Watching a few reviews on YT this does not always seem to have been the case with Wright, but hopefully they will rectify a past reputation, as a knife really should be useable from the off imo.) British made and coming in at this price for a great knife is something to be celebrated at this point in time. Viva Wright! Thank you.

    Wood carving.

Posted by Limey on 13th Jun 2019

The Ettrick, which ever scales you choose is an ideal knife for wood carving, it is so comfortable in your hand and feels like a proper Detail / Roughout carving knife with the added benefit of it being a folder, I highly recommend this knife (Stagg / Buffalo horn / Rosewood) I have all three. As always great service from HH.

    Blade finish?

Posted by Limey on 5th Mar 2019

Ok, all the knives that I have previously purchased have a properly finished edge, at least sharpish out of the box/wrapper that can be stropped to a razor finish. On this amazing looking knife with its awesome Buffalo horn scales had a very poor raggedy blade edge which took a fair amount of time to put right, so if you don't know how to put a hone angle on a blade then you have a big problem. I can only think this down to either bad quality control or poor workmanship? A knife is supposed to cut after all right? With this issue fixed by myself it is an extremely nice knife

    Made in Sheffield

Posted by David on 30th Jan 2019

I don't know about made in Sheffield?? Thrown together in an arf-A**ed way would be more accurate. I love the size simplicity and shape. I love the no nonsense rosewood Scales. But blade alignment is atrocious it couldn't be more off with in the confines of the liners. Blade finish.? It took me several hours to get it like I expected. Yes now I can pop hair on my arm. And chest. And more importantly cut wood. The blade just wouldn't slice and carve without major effort when I got it. Now I can. Also the back spring is poorly finished. Good knife if you're willing to spend considerable time correcting. Unless you're lucky. In the words of Clint Eastwood.. do you feel lucky punk?

    Good

Nice knife, small enough not to be threatening and a shape I like.

    What a shame

Posted by Oldgit on 19th Nov 2017

Lovely knife, buffalo scales are gorgeous, blade centres perfectly. Lovely snap on closing. But some errors in the bolster and an edge which wanders all over the blade. The Chinese manage to get it right and any SAK has a straight edge, so typical of A.Wright Quality control these days. It can be fixed as stated by the other reviewers but it's not sold a unfinished kit. So pretty blunt. No box or packaging, just bubble wrap. Anyway that said, it's lovely and balanced in the hand, very elegant shape, the blade is very small. The price is good, but you need to spend time sharpening and cleaning it before use. HH next day delivery. Thanks again.

    Well worth the money

Posted by Frank C on 22nd May 2017

I bought this knife in the hope it would serve as my go to whittling knife. The blade is the right size and shape, likewise the handle with regards to comfort; and the cost meant that I needn't be paranoid about losing it. When it arrived I admit I was quite taken with it, the rosewood scales don't match but I like that. The only problem was that the edge was not sharp enough to carve with. It took about an hour on the stones to get the edge I need to carve safely but now I have it I carry this little knife everywhere!

    Ettric Pocket Knife. Lovely

Posted by Alan B on 19th Apr 2016

I have just received my A Wright Ettrick Knife and the quality is lovely: tight fitting blade, well centered, and beautiful Buffalo scales. I just wished the blade was a tad longer, it would be the icing on the cake. Not that there is anything wrong with a shorter blade it would just have been nice if the blade had been 5mm longer - Oh well you can't suit everyone, still a grand Knife Great service again from HH. Zero cost postage and with me two days after ordering - brill.
