In one product that fits in the palm of your hand, the Origin™ gives you the collection of tools you need to survive the unexpected and make it back alive. Think of it as the ultimate cross breed of the traditional ten essentials and a survival kit, all wrapped up in one package.

The heart of the Origin™ is its ABS-plastic waterproof case, which contains an array of key survival tools, including TinderQuik fiestarting tinder, 150lb-test braided nylon cord, mil-spec stainless steel wire, and an emergency sewing and fishing kit. And, for those unfamiliar with wilderness survival, backcountry expert Buck Tilton’s survival instructions contain over 60 survival techniques and strategies.

However, the body of the case is really what sets the Origin™ apart - integrated into the lid is a flip-up Rescue Flash signal mirror with retroreflective aiming aid. Flip the case over, and find the one-hand-operable Fire Lite firestarter, as well as a removable liquid-damped compass. Finally, secured in a button-release slot is a fully- functional folding blade knife, with a 100db rescue whistle and ultra-bright LED light integrated into the knife handle. The AUS-8 drop-point blade has been designed for the precision cutting you need during survival emergencies, and it excels at slicing, whittling, and any task where blade control is essential.

      Mixed benefits and faults

The Origin looks good and is a light weight, comfortable carry in the hand or pocket. The external features of the signal mirror, knife/torch/whistle, Fire Lite, and button compass are very good (the torch isn't the brightest you might have but it is perfectly workable for use indoors, or on a wilderness campsite, etc, just don't expect it to be great for long range illumination). The problems really come with the storage. Firstly there isn't enough storage space for the size of this kit. It has similar footprint to a 2oz tobacco tin and is about twice as thick but the storage space is really not big enough for the gear you should be carrying. Then there is the choice of contents; the Tinder Quik tabs are good and the steel wire is versatile and useful. The nylon line is strong and there is a good length of it. The needle is a strong thick large eye one that is practical for clothing or gear repairs with the fishing line. But the safety pins are way too big and the 4 fish hooks are at the top end of what works for survival fishing on inland waters and they are not tied to line. One of these and 3 smaller ones in descending sizes, all ready tied to line, would be far more productive. Incidentally, the fishing kit, safety pins and needle came in a polybag, not a tube as shown in the pic. The foil is OK but as always the corners of the folds develop holes so don't rely on it for making a pan for boiling water or making a cup. And that is where the real issues with this kit lie. Three high priority needs for survival are first aid, shelter and water and this kit provides little or nothing for any of them, but does give space to fishing kit and snare wire for food and huge safety pins for clothing repair which are far lower on the list. You can improvise for first aid but some antiseptic wipe and duct tape would be useful. Any kit like this NEEDS a water bag or condom and some purification tablets and a saw to help in making shelter - even a length of coarse-toothed hacksaw blade is useful for that. The survival tips actually include one that says that you might have to drink dirty water, which is a real risk to survival and should definitely be avoided by having the right items in a survival kit in which such instructions are included! So, there's a mix in this kit; some really high quality functional tools and resources but also some bad choices and design. In all (partly because of the lower pound-dollar exchange rate) it is too expensive for what you get and I'd be tempted to move the good parts into a suitable tin and add the essentials that are missing.
